Players Win Parade Entry Award in 2008 Basque Festival Parade!

Silver Stage marked a victory...at least a tie for victory, in this past weekend's 45th National Basque Festival Parade. The company's entry featured two floats one for our summer children's theater workshop production of Peter Pan, the other for our summer production of the Greek comedy Lysistrata. A float representing the pirate ship Jolly Roger served as transportation for dozens of feisty cast members from Pan. With Captain Hook, Peter and the Lost Boys present, a good time was had by all. Director Carri Smith had her kids pass out candy, show fliers and even refreshing Otter Pops to a very appreciate crowd. The pirate ship part of our entry was judged in the Junior category and tied with the Arinak Basque Dancers. Quite a feat when you think about the parade being for the Basque Festival. Our Lysistrata float featured a mock up of the Athens' Acropolis. Featuring cast members dressed in Greek costume and decorated with period banners, urns and the Olympic Rings the float was a terrific compliment to the parade's historical theme. The second entry was judged in the adult category and although it did not pull off an unprecedented second win for SSP, the float was the subject of hundreds of photographs and was acknowledged warmly by the attending crowds. There was a tie in the adult entry between Manuel Coochum/Elko County Elders and Boise Oinkari Dancers.

The Thomas Scott Foundation, Spring Creek Golf Course and PGA Professional Jason Jerman invite everyone to come participate in Nevada’s most unique and fun golf tournament…the annual, Thomas Scott Memorial Golf Tournament, Saturday, August 9, at the Spring Creek Golf Course. Registration begins at 6:30 am with an 8 am conch shell start. Cost is $40 per person and includes a luau-style lunch, a free golf lesson, and a tournament goody bag. Cart and green fees are extra.

Earlier this year the TSF made a commitment to continue assisting the Junior Golf Program. "The donations are so appreciated Funds will be used for equipment and resources associated with the program", said Spring Creek Golf Course Professional and program coordinator Jason Jerman, "We really appreciate all the help the Committee has given us. You won’t find a more fun tournament or better volunteers all for a great cause."

Besides the Junior Golf program, the foundation has donated to such organizations as; the Igloo, the Spring Creek High School Golf Team, the Gamble Oak Pony Club, the Cinderella Scholarship Pageant, the Silver Stage Players Relay for Life team, Sage Elementary School, Spring Creek Trap and Skeet, and Adopt a Family among others.

The Thomas Scott Memorial Golf Tournament is dedicated to and held in memory of Mr. Thomas Scott. An Elkoan for many years and underground miner for Newmont Mining Corporation, Thomas J. Scott was just 30 years old when he was suddenly taken from his family and friends in a tragic accident on January 9, 2001. Tom is survived by his wife, son and many friends who miss him. The tournament is a way of memorializing Thomas for his love of family, friends and life. Tom was not only a loving family man but an active member of the community.

Anyone wishing to donate a hole sponsorship, auction item, raffle prize or other services should contact the Tom Scott Foundation, the governing organization for the memorial.
