Local Theater Group Continues Tradition of Community Service!

Elko’s community theater company, the Silver Stage Players, have been busy this summer with a number of community service projects. The local group has a long history of giving back to the community which has supported it for nearly 75 years.

Projects got underway in May with SSP’s involvement with Jean Hart’s poetry and artwork project Jean Hart: Artwork from My Heart. Presented in the Northeastern Nevada Museum Theater, members of the local group recited Mrs. Hart’s poetry while prints of her artwork were displayed in theme with each poem. Featured in the poetry performance are Silver Stage Players' Board of Directors members Russ Smith, Tony Piper, Scott Roberts, Amy Nisbet, Frank L. Sawyer, and members Sharron Hughes and Caroline Bruno.

The Players followed that project by participating in this year’s Elko Relay for Life. The signature event for the American Cancer Association, SSP’s team, “Willy’s Walkers”, helped raise money before and during the Relay for the ACS. The company provided three entries in the annual Celebrity Pie Auction and raised nearly $600 for their confections. A ‘poker fun run’ was conducted during the Relay and prizes awarded for the top four hands and the worst hand. Robin Eardley was the top-hand winner netting her a ‘Relay Survival Kit’ featuring an mp3 player and other prizes. Las Vegas photographer Amanda Campbell was on hand to take souvenir photos for ACS donations. Donors were encouraged to use theater props and costumes to make a unique photographic experience. All proceeds from both events went to the American Cancer Society.

In addition to the company’s Relay event fundraisers, the Silver Stage Players invited everyone to the opening of their production of the small-town comedy, Greater Tuna. The fund raising effort called, “Comedy for a Cure”, featured the off-Broadway favorite with a portion of the opening weekend’s box office receipts benefiting the American Cancer Society! All totaled, the team was responsible for more than $2000.00 in donations.

Next stop for the Players was assisting in the 7th annual Thomas Scott Memorial Golf Tournament. This is the third year the theater group has partnered with the Thomas Scott Foundation to assist in the group’s primary fundraiser. Members of the theater group assisted in registration, hole management, and the tournament’s now famous luau lunch.
