Announce Auditions for the Classic Greek Comedy Lysistrata!
The Peloponnesian War rages...Athens versus Sparta...And it took only one woman to stop it!
The Silver Stage Players continue their 2008 Season: Turn Off the Box...Turn On Your Mind! by announcing auditions for the company’s summer production of Aristophanes’ 2400 year old anti-war Greek comedy, Lysistrata. Auditions are scheduled in the Great Basin College Theatre May 19 and 20, 2008 from 6 - 8 pm. Performances are tentatively scheduled for August.
All performers with or without experience are encouraged to try out. Two-minute, prepared comedic pieces are recommended. Cold readings from the script and theater games will also be utilized. This production of Lysistrata has a variable size cast with a core of 9 women and 5 men. The age range of the characters is late teens to 60. Technicians wishing to volunteer for the production are encouraged to attend one of the two audition dates as well. Download an audition form here.
It is now the twenty-first year of the Peloponnesian War and there seems little prospect of peace. A desperate state of things demands a desperate remedy. The women of Athens, led by Lysistrata and supported by female delegates from the other city-states, determine to take matters into their own hands and force the men to stop the war. They agree to be passive and take no more part in the amorous game of love. Before long Lysistrata’s device proves effective and peace is concluded. Set with the Acropolis as its backdrop, Lysistrata is Aristophanes' anti-war comedy, written in 411 BC and is the third and concluding play of Aristophanes' War and Peace series. The play was originally performed at the Dionysus and Lenaia festivals.
Aristophanes was a Greek Old Comic dramatist. Known as the Father of Comedy, he was around thirty when he achieved sudden success in the Theater of Dionysus. He is famous for writing comedies such as The Birds and The Frogs. He wrote forty plays, eleven of which survive. Many of Aristophanes' plays were political and often satirized well-known citizens of Athens. Lysistrata is one of the most produced plays in the world. It has been adapted into a Mozart-like opera, a 1980's pop song, an episode of one of television's most popular sitcoms in M.A.S.H., a film version, even illustrations by Pablo Picasso. The show was produced all over the world on March 3, 2003 as part of the global Lysistrata Project.
Directing the Players for the seventeenth time is Board of Directors member, actor and director Frank L. Sawyer. Frank last appeared on stage in 2007’s production of Glengarry Glen Ross. Mr. Sawyer’s directing credits include Glengarry Glen Ross; Much Ado About Nothing; Love, Sex and the I.R.S.; I Do! I Do!; The Odd Couple; The Zoo Story; Talk Radio; and Bringing it All Back Home among others.
